Evolve Interview: "four's the magic number"

We talk balancing with Turtle Rock.
Gillen McAllister 12 February 2014

After getting hands-on with Evolve, Gillen McAllister talks with Turtle Rock's Matt O'Driscoll about the development of the game, how they've balanced the action, and the reason the studio opted for PC, Xbox One and PS4.

"When you're playing a monster... as soon as you take out one of the hunters and they're down to three it's like 'I can see where three are, it's like 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3'. It's kind of like more controllable. When you have the fourth in there it's like '1, 2, 3, well where's that one. 1, 2, 3, where's that one'. On the flipside, if we put in a fifth hunter it's just too much, the monster's just going to struggle to play with that many hunters. We kind of found that four is our sweet spot. 4 v 1 was where we ended up, because it's controllable from the monster side, but there's still that slight edge from the hunter's side, so we found that four's the magic number."

Is that the same with two monsters? "Yeah, exactly the same thing, it just worked out that it was just the better gameplay."

We got hands-on with Evolve shortly before this interview took place. Head this way to read what we thought of the 4 v 1 multiplayer shooter. And also check out our post-embargo lift discussion on the game - with four of the team who played it - on our latest Gamereactor Live show.
