Norwegian indie outfit Red Thread Games was founded by some former Funcom developers in 2012 to continue the Longest Journey/Dreamfall series. Their episodic continuation Dreamfall: Chapters was released between 2014 and 2016 with the Final Cut arriving in 2017 (PS4, Xbox One). Their second project, Draugen, was actually first teased five years ago, and now the studio has committed to releasing it in 2019 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
The studio has been tinkering with the game over the years and has been fully focused on its since the release of Dreamfall: Chapters - Final Cut. It has gone through numerous iterations over the year and it is described as a first-person "Fjord Noir" mystery game.
Writer and creative director, Ragnar Tørnquist, had this to say in a post on the official website:
"It's not like the game's been on ice since then, however. We've tinkered with it continuously, and we've rebooted the project on several occasions. The current version of Draugen is the best version of Draugen, and I'm personally relieved that we never got around to finishing any of the previous versions. They wouldn't have been nearly as good."
Below is an excerpt detailing the setting and story, via the game's Steam page.
"The year is 1923. You play Edward Charles Harden, an American traveller who's come to Norway to find his missing sister. But you're not alone: at every step of the way, Edward's accompanied by his ward, Lissie; a gregarious, independent and enigmatic young woman. Together, you must explore this scenic coastal community — nestled amongst the fjords and mountains of rural Norway — in your search for Edward's sister, and unearth the darkness that lies beneath the picturesque surface."
It sure looks like a beautiful postcard from Norway, but there's something sinister buried here, that's for certain. The teaser ends with the tagline "I am not alone", which references the fact that Lissie will operate on her own while keeping Harden company.
