Wizards Union Expands as Workers Push Back on Generative AI

The Wizards union is expanding to D&D and Team X, pressing Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to adopt an enforceable generative AI policy.

The Dungeons & Dragons team and Team X at Wizards of the Coast are joining the Wizards of the Coast-CWA union, expanding an organising drive that began with the Magic: The Gathering Arena team. The union is urging Hasbro and Wizards leaders to stop promoting generative AI and adopt an enforceable policy, IGN reported.

Team X works on Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters, according to IGN. The expansion is scheduled for October 8; the union has given the company until October 13 to voluntarily recognise the enlarged unit. The Arena team unionised in April and later won its election, but Wizards did not voluntarily recognise that group.

The union’s other demands include full ownership of creative work employees make outside work. If Hasbro does not voluntarily recognise the expanded unit, the union would need to file with the National Labor Relations Board and win another election, IGN reported. The dispute adds to labour debates across games, including recent worker protections and union activity, while questions of human authorship remain part of the wider generative AI discussion in game development.
