Sega have made an announcement that a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog game in 2D will be coming out next year with HD graphics. The working title Project Needlemouse and with the confirmation of HD graphics Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are the obvious candidates in terms of platform choice.
In a Q&A at Gamespot Sega's Ken Ballough had the following to say:
"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay. Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."
Sounds like Sega are finally starting to listen to the Sonic fans. Do we dare hope to see more of Project Needlemouse at Tokyo Game Show later this month?
