Amazon and Activision surprised many tech fans on the stage of the AWS re:Invent 2017 conference in Las Vegas with the unveiling of the so-called "Destiny 2 Ghost Skill" implementation of Amazon's digital voice control assistant Alexa. The service, currently available only in the UK and USA, shall reduce the player's menu interaction with Guardians able to make specific tasks via voice control.
Joining and leaving friends, fire teams or clan activities is said to be easier now, because we don't have to navigate the menus anymore and can continue to fire at foes. If people don't know how to proceed through an area on the other hand, they can simply ask Alexa to explain the situation and help them navigate. Based on their current power level, Alexa should even be able to give recommendations to the player' on what activities would be suitable. If Destiny 2 is finally getting loadout options (which Bungie has not yet confirmed) Alexa may even be able to switch between these, according to Activision. You will find the Destiny 2-Alexa app and further information about the service here.
"The Ghost serves as your guide and companion in Destiny 2 the game, and now players will be able to bring that experience into the real world with them through Alexa," explained Activision's CEO Eric Hirshberg during the presentation. "The Destiny 2 Ghost skill is the first of its kind and the most innovative and immersive gaming experience to date on Alexa. We're excited to give our community of players, who are among the most-dedicated fans in the world, new ways to play Destiny 2 with the Ghost skill and Limited-Edition Destiny 2 Ghost. The lines between in-game and out-of-game have been blurred in an incredible new way."
Steve Rabuchin, Vice President of Amazon's Alexa branch, had this to add in the same press release:
"Alexa is now part of the Destiny 2 experience, and we're excited for what that means for Destiny 2 players and the future of games and voice technology. Gaming is an example of where voice can create a more engaging experience in a natural and delightful way for customers. Rather than interrupting gameplay to navigate menus, players can just ask Ghost through Alexa to help with certain tasks. Players love the Destiny 2 experience, and now Alexa can make it even more immersive and fun."
Furthermore, the companies announced a physical wi-fi speaker in Destiny's famous Ghost design for release late December. The gadget will even have the iconic voice lines fromNolan North who does bring our Ghost to life in the game. Amazon will sell the Ghost speaker at $89.99 and it starts shipping on December 19th.
