We knew it was coming soon, but now it is official. An Overwatch League spokesperson has issued a statement to GGRecon, where it confirms that the Activision Blizzard-run franchised league is officially being terminated and that competitive Overwatch will instead be taken in a different direction in the future.
The statement specifically adds: "We are transitioning from the Overwatch League and evolving competitive Overwatch in a new direction. We are grateful to everyone who made OWL possible and remain focused on building our vision of a revitalized esports program. We are excited to share details with you all in the near future."
This all comes shortly after OverActive Media, the parent company of the Toronto Defiant team, made an official announcement confirming that it has exited from the OWL and taken the $6 million termination fee.
We're waiting on further news from Blizzard about what the future of competitive Overwatch will look like, but it's expected to revolve around the ESL FACEIT Group running third-party organised events.
