Sony to shut down the Singstar servers

Those still rocking out on London Studio's then-popular party game Singstar won't have access to the servers after January 31.

Back when Sony's Playstation 2 ruled the world and almost through the entire Playstation 3 era, music games were a huge phenomenon. From dance games from Konami to guitar games from Activision, the very weird Wii Music from Nintendo and of course Sony's Singstar games - they were everywhere and were played by basically everybody.

Lately, however, things haven't been as nice and Activision shut down the online features of their Guitar Hero Live reboot and Harmonix has been struggling with Rock Band 4. Singstar is no exception, and now Sony says it is time to say goodbye to the online portion of the game:

"As of 31st January, 2020, 23.59GMT, the SingStore servers will be shut down. All online functionality, network features, and digital music downloads will be immediately disabled. You will still be able to play and enjoy these games in offline mode."

Sony notes that downloaded songs you've bought, and songs on the disc will still be playable, but also warns PS2/PS3 users that "if a downloaded song is deleted, it cannot be re-downloaded".

As we previouslyreported, Sony is also shutting down the servers for Driveclub on the very same day. Sony has received a fair share of criticism for how early they shut down the online support for their games.

Why Sony often decides to go this route unlike the console competitors, who usually let their online services stay live for way longer, is unknown - but we doubt a whole lot of people will be upset that the SingStore servers soon are gone from Singstar, or are we wrong here?
