Fortnite, PUBG, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout mode all take on the battle royale genre in different ways and have large followings, meaning that every time a new battle royale game comes along, the question is asked as to how it sets itself apart.
This is something that many asked when Respawn and EA revealed Apex Legends yesterday, but Respawn has released a developer diary in which they talk about the game and what makes it stand out from the crowd.
"When battle royale started to blow up, we recognised that this was an opportunity," said design director Mackey McCandlish. "This is a new genre, and it was a chance to define that space."
The team also explains that, since they play games themselves, they knew entering into the genre would require something different to set itself apart. Part of this comes from the Legends, the characters you get that try to avoid the "generic" soldier vibe. This doesn't just apply to the visuals, but also the personality and the mechanics they bring to the table, especially the tactical, ultimate, and passive abilities.
Other unique aspects that are talked about in the video below include respawning, as well as a "smart ping system" that lets you mark items and locations on the map easily to enhance communication, something we admired in our launch impressions.
For the full video check down below, as the developers also talk about the setting that takes place after Titanfall 2. Have you been trying Apex Legends?
