APB numbers published by RTW

Trying to prove the game's worth
Petter Mårtensson 24 August 2010

Things have not been looking good for Realtime Worlds lately, and as the company tries to sell off its shooter/MMO-hybrid APB it has issued a statement about how healthy the game actually is and how attractive it should be for potential buyers.

According to the statement, APB has "130,000 registered players, with the average player playing for 4 hours each day." It also states that the game's "unique business model sees paying players averaging $28 per month, a combination of game time and user to user marketplace trading." Paul Dounis, of business rescue and restructuring specialist Begbies Traynor, adds that these are "healthy numbers and reflect positively on APB as a ongoing concern."

Of course, one would do well to look extra close at the information - first of all there's no real numbers out how many players are currently still playing the game, only how many have at one time or another actually been registered for the game. Also, it doesn't mention how many of those still playing are actually what the statement calls "paying players". When you buy APB you do get 50 hours of gametime and we have no idea how many have played beyond those 50 hours, how many still have time left or how many players have left the game before those hours were up.

In short, there really isn't that much to take away from this statement for anyone not sitting on more information or more detailed numbers.
