Bungie responds to Destiny 2 shaders kerfuffle

Angry fans don't like the limited-use shaders system.
Mike Holmes 8 September 2017

In old Destiny, players would unlock shaders while they played and later use them to give their armour a distinctive colour scheme. Players could swap between the different schemes at will, however, that freedom to switch styles hasn't transitioned to the recently released sequel, and some fans aren't happy about it.

Most notably there have been plenty of concerned posts over on Reddit, where some players are frustrated that they're being forced to commit shaders to individual armour pieces that they may well upgrade at a later point.

Their argument is that doing so essentially wastes the shader in question, possibly even encouraging people not to commit shaders until they've completed a whole armour set, for fear that the shaders they want mightn't drop when they want/need them.

Some players have even threatened to boycott microtransactions in the game altogether, which is perhaps what prompted Destiny 2 director Luke Smith to respond on Twitter, reassuring fans that the plan is for them to be "flush" with shaders, and that characters that are level 20+ will see them drop more often.

"Shaders are now an ongoing reward for playing. Customization will inspire gameplay. Each planet has unique armor and Shader rewards," he wrote on social media.
