Supermassive Games has laid off more than 70 staff, two months after announcing a redundancy consultation and planned cuts in August, according to Video Games Chronicle. The Guildford-based studio had said the measures were intended to help secure its long-term sustainability.
Former employee Frank Tindle reported on LinkedIn that more than 70 people across several disciplines were leaving, including developers, artists, producers, quality assurance and operations staff. The cuts mark Supermassive’s second major round of layoffs, following more than 30 redundancies in July 2025.
The 2025 reductions contributed to a delay for Directive 8020, Supermassive’s latest game, which was released earlier in 2026. The studio is best known for Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology; the latest game received middling reviews from critics and players, according to Video Games Chronicle.

The latest job losses come after a period of change for the developer. Robert Henrysson stepped down as CEO in June 2026, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family and attend to his personal investment portfolio.
No confirmed details have been provided about how the layoffs will affect future Dark Pictures projects. For now, the reported scale of the cuts adds another substantial reduction to the studio’s recent history, following the more than 30 roles eliminated last year.
