Strafe: "it's an authored experience, but it's fresh every time"

Pixel Titans discuss their roguelike love letter to Quake and Doom.
Tor Erik Dahl 6 March 2015

During GDC we tracked down Thom Glunt from Pixel Titans to find out more about the studio's recent Kickstarter success. During the interview we discovered more about the old-school first-person shooter, Strafe, and the inspirations that have informed the game's design.

Glunt explained: "Our motivation with Strafe was just to create a game that really took our favourite parts of games like Quake and Doom and just merge them with the roguelike idea. So you can enjoy quick gameplay experiences with Strafe, or extend that into hours of fun, but you always have a new experience when you jump in."

Glunt then revealed how the studio are keeping the experience fresh, saying: "It's not very granular, like Minecraft, instead we're authoring rooms that we test for fun."

"They have probably ten different entrance ways, and like five to ten different secret rooms built inside of it, and then the engine goes through and when it puts the levels together it'll choose what doors open up, what walls disappear, and what secret areas are activated. So it's an authored experience, but it's fresh every time you play."

Strafe is expected to launch sometime in 2016.
