Planetside 2 heads to the Battle Islands

Nexus shows off 96-player battles on icy terrain.
Mike Holmes 2 July 2013

The next update for Planetside 2, Battle Islands, will focus gameplay away from the large-scale continental battles that players will be familiar with, and into smaller environments designed for up to 96 players.

There'll still be enough room for tanks and aircraft, and 48v48 is not a number to be scoffed at, but the Battle Islands should offer players a more focussed experience when it launches.

The trailer for the first island, Nexus, shows us infantry battling in an ice cave, and tanks thrashing each other in a frozen canyon and in an alpine forest. There's also a bunch of screens, which can be seen below, that illustrate what the new environment is going to look like.

Planetside 2 was released on PC at the end of last year, and is heading to Playstation 4 sometime after the console launches. It offers players a chance to battle over huge persistent maps for territory on the planet of Auraxis. It's free-to-play and you can sign up for it here.
