EVE-VR: "I think we have a market"

We talk to CCP about working with the Oculus Rift.

One of the most eye-catching games at E3 was the virtual reality experience offered by EVE-VR. Bengt Lemne talks with CCP's Sigurdur G. Gunnarsson about working with the Oculus Rift to create the proof of concept sci-f shooter.

After we'd got hands-on with the game, Gunnarsson told us a little bit more about how it had come together: "This is a proof of concept game we made in seven weeks, just to try virtual reality and how that would apply to the Eve universe. In this game you actually sit in the cockpit of a fighter spacecraft. It's multiplayer, we have two teams... You sit in the cockpit and you fly out. You have two weapons; you have lasers and you have a missile system that you use your head to aim, lock on to players and the missiles fire off."

"Things move fast, it's really easy to use," he told us when we asked what it was like working with the Oculus Rift. He also explained that EVR has received a very positive reception during the event: "We're getting really positive reactions, people really want this. But since this is a new thing, virtual reality is finally coming to point where it's actually really good," he said, before later adding: "I think we have a market to do these kind of games."

It's difficult to accurately describe what it's like using the headset, but Gunnarsson gives it a try: "If you have the goggles on your sense of depth and sense of scale is completely nothing like you've experienced before. So things feel really big, and when you get up close to things you actually feel it and you can feel that this thing is ten meters big if it's right in front of you. That's actually very nice and gives you a different perspective on things."
