As we look forward to the next few years bringing a lot more The Witcher to our lives, both in the release of the Songs of the Past expansion, and The Witcher 4, it seems things aren't going smoothly for every upcoming Witcher project. Namely, the multiplayer spinoff Project Sirius, first announced all the way back in 2022, has seen more layoffs.
In 2023, developers were let go from Project Sirius developer The Molasses Flood, which has since been absorbed into CD Projekt Red as a whole. A new report from Kotaku shows that nine people were let go from Project Sirius, as part of a broader shift in development strategy.
Via a statement obtained from CD Projekt Red, it was confirmed that nine people were laid off, with four coming from the Boston office and five being let go from the Warsaw office. Another nine were moved from Project Sirius and offered other roles within the company, working on different projects. That means the overall total of people working on Project Sirius has dropped from 83 down to 65.
While it has been in the works for four years, it doesn't seem like Project Sirius is much closer to releasing. As attitudes in gamers shift away from multiplayer spinoffs of their favourite franchises, it may be that CD Projekt Red doesn't want to dump another live-service game on people's heads just yet.
