The Canadian Open (National Bank Open) is now without any of the top-5 players in the ATP at the round of 16, the first time this happens since 1991. Alexander Zverev lost to Tallon Griekspoor at the round of 64 in Montréal, 6(3)-7, 6-2, 6-4, a big upset as Zverev was the big favourite for the title with Sinner, Alcaraz nor Djokovic, who had confirmed they wouldn't be here weeks ago.

The withdrawal of Felix Auger-Aliassime due to injury and the loss of Daniil Medvedev to Botic van de Zandschulp also in first round means that the Australian Alex de Miñaur, World No. 7 (and third seed in Canada) is the higher ranked men's player in the tournament that has just started. He will face Cameron Norrie today, not earlier than 19:40 CEST, 18:40 BST.

Taylor Fritz, who came from winning the Washington Open, also lost in first round to Thiago Agustín Tirante (his rival in the final, Rafa Jódar, came from behind and defeated Corentin Moutet, will next face Lorenzo Musetti for the second time in one week).

Flavio Cobolli also lost in first round, so the second higher ranked player in Canada is World No. 10 Ben Shelton, who will next face Zizou Bergs after defeating Brooksby. Shelton was the champion last year, making him theoretically the slight favourite this year, but it seems this will be a very open and unpredictable Masters 1,000...
