Ugandan football star David Owori beaten to death during a robbery in Kampala

The Ugandan population are asking for better security and response against violent crimes in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

David Owori, midfielder at the Ugandan Premier League team SC Villa and the Uganda national team, has been murdered, beating to death in a suspected robbery near his home in the Ugandan capital, Kampala. According to police, Owori was assaulted on Tuesday night when he resisted an attempt to steal his phone, the attackers hit the footballer with paving stones, leaving him with fatal injuries and died hours later in a hospital.

The news has shock the country, as he was one of the best known footballers in the country, captain of SC Villa, a team that in 2024 won their first Uganda Premier League title in 20 years. A minute of silence was observed at the Parliament on Wednesday and the population are demanding higher security and punishment against criminals as crime rises in Kampala.

Just weeks ago, another prominent player, rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, was also killed by a mob in Kampala.

Another footballer, Rogers Ssebyondya, has died this week in Uganda, this one of accidental causes, after a mid-air collision with a goalkeeper during a match, he landed awkwardly and sustained critical injuries.
