There's some huge announcements coming out of Nintendo today. First there's the revelation that the company is moving into the PC, mobile and tablet space, which is potentially huge for the platform holder given the strength of their IP.
However, just as siginificant is the confirmation of some new hardware in development at the company. Codenamed "Nintendo NX" or "Project NX", there's very few details at this stage other than the tantalising line that it's a "brand new concept," and that it's expected to be unveiled properly sometime next year.
"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX'," Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata teased. "It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year."
This announcement, along with the new subscription service that's replacing Club Nintendo and that will link the platform holder's existing consoles with their new ventures in the mobile world, times they are a changing at the House of Mario.
