Among us nostalgics, Oliver Harper is a familiar figure, not least online where his well-crafted essays on cult films have earned him a sizeable fan base, but also a great deal of respect within the industry. His signature no-nonsense approach that prioritizes facts over humour combines with a rare eye for detail and a genuine passion for the subject. In short, this is an individual I have a lot of respect for and who has now released his second major documentary - Here Comes a New Challenger. A compelling and enlightening immersion into the profound legacy of one of gaming's most iconic titles, Street Fighter II.

As with In Search of the Last Action Heroes, Harper himself is once again the director, taking us on a nostalgic journey that highlights not only the game's cultural impact but also its lasting influence on the gaming industry. With engaging storytelling and attention to detail, Here Comes a New Challenger begins with a historical flashback to the release of Street Fighter II in the early 90s and slowly takes us through the many aspects that shaped the game and the enduring culture around it.

Here Comes A New Challenger

Through a series of interviews with developers active during the period, combined with industry experts and influential players, the documentary gives us a comprehensive understanding of the game's importance and the challenges faced during its development. Skillfully blending archival footage with newly produced insights, the film paints an extremely vivid picture of the fervor and passion often associated with Street Fighter II, especially when it comes to arcade culture. It's even impressive how well the movie manages to evoke a sense of nostalgia and really bring you as a viewer back to the era when Street Fighter II dominated the scene.

Here Comes a New Challenger captures the excitement, the camaraderie and not least how the contestants did their utmost to push the boundaries of what was possible within the framework of the game. And here we come to one of the film's greatest strengths, its incredible way of going deep and giving us an unusually penetrating insight into the many aspects of the game and the individuals around it. We see the rise of several legendary competitors, their unique playing styles and the fierce rivalry that captivated so many around the world. The dedication and sacrifices these individuals are forced to make and what it actually takes to become one of the best.

Furthermore, Here Comes a New Challenger also highlights the game's cultural influence and its lasting impact on popular culture worldwide. How Street Fighter II became a phenomenon, a behemoth that crossed borders and oceans from East to West and left no one untouched. The characters, the music, the iconic attacks, the cinematography, the merchandise and so much more, nothing is left untouched and backed by brilliant production values, the documentary succeeds in truly demonstrating how and why Street Fighter II became a cultural touchstone that to this day continues to resonate and touch gamers worldwide, young and old.

It doesn't really matter if you're already familiar with the game's history or not, because Here Comes a New Challenger succeeds in doing something as rare as offering something for everyone. It's a remarkably competent and in many ways definitive tribute to Street Fighter II and its enduring legacy. A superb blend of nostalgia, human stories, technical insights and cultural analysis that, despite its more than substantial runtime of 150 minutes, never fails to entertain. Engaging, fast-paced and analytical storytelling blends seamlessly with stunning production values to make Here Comes A New Challenger an absolute must-see and a true delight for nostalgics and game nerds alike.
