With Nomura currently leading development of Kingdom Hearts III, it was a surprise - to everyone including Nomura - that he was also going to head up the Remake team.

Tetsuya Nomura has been talking about the origins of the recently announced Final Fantasy VII: Remake, explaining how the project came about, as well as revealing the amusing story of how he found out he was to be the game's director.

In an interview with Famitsu (and via Kotaku) director Nomura revealed that "a while ago, I tried to start up the project [to remake FFVII], but at the time it didn't come to fruition."

Later on Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto approached Nomura and original director Yoshinori Kitase about the remake, and this is how the project got off the ground: "Mr. Hashimoto was involved with the advertising and marketing of the original, so like [Mr. Kitase and myself], VII has a strong place in his heart."

"As preproduction went along and I offered my opinions on what I thought should be done, Mr. Kitase would asked me how the individual elements should be adjusted in fine detail. It was very perplexing. Then one day, as I was checking the internal company presentation video it said ‘Director Tetsuya Nomura' at the end."

Obviously Nomura hadn't read a rather important memo: "So I called up Mr. Kitase and said, ‘It says that I'm the director for some reason.' To which he replied, ‘Of course it does.'"

Final Fantasy VII: Remake was announced during Sony's conference at E3. The game is not only going to get a lick of paint, but it'll also be adjusted and improved in a variety of ways. We look forward to hearing more about what'll be different in the new version of the classic RPG in the coming months.
