CONMEBOL and Colombian Football Federation donate $1m to those affected by the earthquake
The South American football confederation and Colombia urge other football organisations to support initiatives to support those affected.
CONMEBOL (the confederation of South American football) and the Colombian Football Federation has made a donation of $1m to the victims of the earthquake that hit Colombia earlier this week, which has left 265 people dead, more than 3,494 injured, and 496 people still missing at the time of writing.
The money will be sent to the "Colombia, one heart" campaign, led by the First Lady of Colombia, Ana Lucía Pineda, and will be used for reconstruction efforts for the families and communities affected by disaster.
"With this action, CONMEBOL and the FCF reaffirm that football transcends the pitch and remains close to its people, especially in the most difficult times. Likewise, both institutions call upon the international sports community, clubs, strategic partners, and fans to continue supporting the fundraising and supply initiatives launched to address this emergency".
Dimayor (Colomnia's top football division, acronym of "División Mayor") will also make donations through all 36 professional football clubs, "through an entity that provides us with all the guarantees of the appropriate use of these resources", as reported by ESPN.
