Starbreeze on Payday 2: "We need to find our roots again"

We talk to producer Andreas Häll about the Hardcore Henry update and more.

We recently spoke to Andreas Häll, producer of Payday 2, about what's in store for the future of the game. The game has been out for two years, and the team has added lots of new content, to the game over the course of around 100 updates. While sporting over 9 million players to date, Payday 2 has been hit with some controversy lately as players reacted against the introduction of microtransactions.

In our interview with Häll, he says that the team has been in 'a kind of experiment phase,' where they were trying to find their place. "We've done a lot of silly stuff, with focus on humour, which is great; the community has appreciated it, we like doing it and it's a natural step for a game that has been out for a long time. Now we need to find our roots again, and think 'what made Payday good,' why did people start playing it?' So now we're trying to find that dark serious, exciting feeling of being a criminal or bank robber."

The developers are currently doing a collaboration for Payday 2 with a new movie called Hardcore Henry. "It's super hardcore, very intense, and we think that this is something that will fit our Payday universe very well. We're doing a heist and introducing a character based on that movie."

The new character, Jimmy, is now available for Payday 2, and new heists are being introduced over the course of a few days.
