Underworld Ascendant hits Kickstarter on Feb 4

Paul Neurath of Ultima Underworld, Thief and System Shock fame is looking for funds.

On the official website Neurath wrote a blog entry that detailed his struggle to create a sequel after 1993's Ultima Underworld II, ending up in the pitch for his new game.

As you may or may not be aware, Paul Neurath, industry veteran best known for his work at Looking Glass (Ultima Underworld, Thief, System Shock), is working on a new game called Underworld Ascendant (formerly known as Underworld Ascension). The obviously harkens to the old Underworld games, and a new team has been assembled at OtherSide Entertainment in order to make it come true.

"The newest incarnation of the franchise, Underworld Ascendant, will retain the distinctive fantasy RPG gameplay of the originals. We already have an early prototype running on the PC. At that same time we will be pushing forward with new innovations --- I can't wait to tell you more about what we have planned!

But this can only happen with your help. As an indie studio, we are looking to our fans to fund a significant portion of the development through our upcoming Kickstarter campaign, which begins on February 4th. We aren't shy about our ambitions to make a great game, but that takes serious resources and effort.

Beyond funding, we are inviting you in on the making of Underworld Ascendant. Rarely have fans been able to participate in the often unpredictable, sometimes messy creative process that gives birth to innovative games. We hope you'll join us on this adventure!"

No details on the size of the campaign has been released, but in less than two weeks we'll get an idea of the scope of the project and some thereafter we'll known if there are enough fans out there willing to put their faith and money into the project.
