Amiibo figurines were on display during Nintendo's digital E3 event, and the first game that'll be compatible with the new tech will be the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. (which itself was confirmed as coming to the console this winter).
The tech, which will be familiar to anyone who has used either Sklyanders or Disney Infinity, will focus on a selection of Nintendo characters, represented as figurines. When they touch the GamePad information then goes into the game, with figure's data changing and evolving as you play.
We were shown a selection of popular Nintendo characters, and more were confirmed as being in development. Super Smash Bros. is to be the first game the feature Amiibo functionality, but Nintendo also mentioned other games such as Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Yoshi's Wooly World.
It was also announced that a peripheral is coming next year that will allow the tech to work with Nintendo 3DS as well.
