Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has been out for just over a week, and in that time it's accrued 485,000 sales, according to the latest figures. That's not a bad debut, but it apparently could have been a lot better, with the game potentially selling more than double that amount, if some things had gone better with its launch.
Particularly, Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics says that the disappointing PC port has let Sony down as much as it has let Steam players down. Even in the open beta, performance issues were clear, and they weren't entirely fixed ahead of launch. Conspiracy theorists in the Steam reviews said that this was a purposeful move to push people towards buying the PS5 version of the game. Fighting games usually sell better on consoles, anyway, due to multiplayer access and ease of local play.
However, Elliott believes that the game was damaged severely in its sales by this initial poor reputation of its PC port. "Arc has been patching hard, and many issues are already fixed, but first impressions are sticky. Tokon might have sold closer to 1M if the Steam stuff hadn't been such an issue. Word of mouth was cut short," Elliott writes.
The game has also had its strongest performance in the US, with more than 70% of players coming from the country, both when it comes to Steam and PlayStation sales. Even with a strong fighting formula and Marvel's IP, it seems that it's going to be a slow burn for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls if it wants to sell millions of copies down the line.
