For a long, long time, Sonic games were practically a running joke. After Sonic Adventure 2 was released for the Dreamcast, the quality plummeted, and for nearly two decades, it wasn't uncommon to see outright bashing of the hedgehog's adventures, or at least very mediocre reviews.

Fortunately, he's back in top form nowadays, and the turnaround came sometime around 2017's Sonic Mania. Today, the games consistently maintain high quality, and the movies are massive hits at the box office every time, and now we have a prime example of Sonic's newfound greatness.

Via Bluesky, Sega has announced that the 2022 blockbuster adventure Sonic Frontiers has now sold over five million copies, an increase of nearly half a million since last year. To celebrate, everyone who owns the game will receive "the iconic Sonic Adventure 2 Shoes" to use in-game.

One might suspect that the recently released Definitive Edition for the Switch 2, which came out earlier this summer, has been a major contributing factor to the increased interest. Another factor that may have influenced sales is the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog turned 35 in 2026, which has led to a series of celebrations. In addition, there's Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, whose frequent updates have kept him in the media spotlight.

You can read our review of Sonic Frontiers at this link, although a great deal has been added since then that has further enhanced the adventure.
