The first Zelda adventure has gone co-op 40 years after its release

As you might suspect, this is all thanks to a new mod that makes it possible to play through the game with a friend.

Although there have been a few, generally less successful Zelda games over the years that focused on multiplayer, it's undeniable that Zelda is widely regarded as a single-player series. And it's been that way ever since The Legend of Zelda was released in 1986.

Now, however, Time Extension points out that this very classic adventure - which introduced everything from Link to Hyrule, Ganon, and the iconic theme song - has gained support for co-op. As you might guess, this involves a mod, which the developer Deric Miller calls Z for 2, and writes:

"40 years after its initial release, The Legend of Zelda is now available to play as a two-player simultaneous cooperative multiplayer game. Player 2 takes on the role of Link's Shadow.

"Either player can pick up and use any item, and each player can select their active item independently of the other. Players share resources and health. Each player's Select button switches their active item without the need to pull up the inventory screen."
