Don Nelson, one of the biggest NBA legends, has died at the age of 86 after suffering a stroke. As a player, he played for 14 seasons, mainly eleven seasons at the Boston Celtics, between 1965 and 1976, winning five NBA championships; the Celtics retired his No. 19. Before that he played for Chicago Zephyrs and Los Angeles Lakers.
After retiring, he spent 34 years working as a coach, for the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks, with a record of 1,335 wins, 1,063 losses, the record for most regular season wins of any coach in NBA history until being surpassed by Gregg Popovich in 2022.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said that "Don Nelson revolutionized NBA basketball through his fearlessness, ingenuity and deep conviction. He brought an unmistakable personality to everything he did, and his impact on our sport will continue to be felt for generations."
Nelson lived his final years in Maui, in a farm of flowers, coffee and cannabis, but moved his final months to Frisco, Texas.
