Rime inspired by Tomb Raider, but wasn't an adventure at first
Tequila Works talk about the evolution of their upcoming PS4 exclusive.
Rime, the highly anticipated second effort from Tequila Works (Deadlight), had a really different style and feel in the early stages of its development. Raúl Rubio, game director, reveals that fact during an extensive video doc by XatakaTV (in Spanish).
Among other things, the Madrid-based studio highlights the contribution of every single team member that has helped Rime become what it is today, a moment in time in which Rubio admits that the project "wouldn't be recognised by its own mother", underlining the significant changes it has gone through. This was Rime at the beginning:
"Originally, the project was some sort of tower defense with strategy elements, a la Gauntlet, where you could choose male or female character. Now it is an evocative experience in a Mediterranean island with an eight years old kid. It's a experience of discovery."
However, the team ended up being inspired by more pure adventures such as Tomb Raider or Ico, and naturally fans also point out its similarities with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker's aesthetics. David Canela, designer, recalls they looked at Tomb Raider's adventurous approach, but claims Tequila Works has been trying to shape its own identity all the time.
