Earlier this week Microsoft announced that they were looking into facilitating cross-network play between Xbox One and PC, as well as potentially opening up the function to other console networks (obviously PlayStation 4 and, to a lesser extent, Wii U, would be the obvious candidates).
This week we caught up with SCE's European president Jim Ryan, and during our interview we put the question to him, asking for his response to Microsoft's announcement, and this is what he had to say:
"In some ways I struggle to work out what all the fuss is about here, because this is something that we've been doing now for quite some time.
"We've done it with PC, we've actually done it with Xbox consoles on Diablo and Grand Theft Auto, and we're always open to discussions with developers and publishers about this.
"Like I say, it's something we've been doing for some time now and we continue to be receptive to it."
This sentiment has been reinforced by PlayStation chief Shuhei Yoshida, who recently said something very similar in an interview.
"I understand their policies changed, right?" Yoshida said to Eurogamer. "They're saying they're going to do cross-platform play between Xbox One and PC with some games.
"We've been doing that with PS3 and PC, PS4 and PC most recently with Street Fighter V and Rocket League and other games. That's noting new for us, in terms of working with developers and publishers to allow cross-platform play between PC and PS4."
When asked specifically about linking up with Xbox One, Yoshida commented: "Because PC is an open platform it's much more straightforward. Connecting two different closed networks is much more complicated so we have to work with developers and publishers to understand what it is they are trying to accomplish.
"We also have to look at the technical aspect - and the technical aspect could be the easiest. We also have to look at policy issues and business issues as well."
The full interview with Jim Ryan will be available soon, so stay tuned for that, where we discuss PlayStation VR and the ongoing good fortune enjoyed by the PS4.
