Cryptic Studios have announced that their superhero-MMO Champions Online will be switching to a free-to-play model during the first quarter of 2011. The studio is setting up two tiers of membership, silver and gold, and beta-testing for the whole thing will start in November.

If you're interested in finding out more about the whole deal, there's a FAQ on the official site and a table that explains exactly what the differences between silver and gold players are. One example is that silver players will be locked to certain archetypes, while gold players will be able to customize their own characters and their powers - the way the game works right now, that is.
