The latest news on Canada. In a tightly contested election, Mark Carney's Liberal Party secured a minority government, falling short of an outright majority but maintaining power amid rising tensions with the United States.

Carney, addressing supporters in Ottawa, stated that Canada's longstanding model of economic integration with its southern neighbor is now over, marking a potential shift in the country's trade strategy. Here's what he said:

"The system of open global trade anchored by the United States, a system that Canada has relied on since the Second World War, a system that, while not perfect, has helped deliver prosperity for our country for decades, is over."

The Prime Minister's remarks come after weeks of aggressive rhetoric from Donald Trump. With no clear majority, Carney's administration will need to negotiate support from smaller parties as it prepares for a more self-reliant economic path.
