Stronger leadership could unlock North America's AWP talent

Junior says NA AWP talent is being held back by weak IGL support, with Voca's Major hopes hinging on upcoming trips abroad this season.

Voca AWPer Paytyn "junior" Johnson believes North America has no shortage of raw AWP talent, but argued the region simply lacks the high-level in-game leaders needed to push that talent forward. Speaking with Dust2.us Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey "Mnmzzz" after Voca's 2-0 win over BESTIA at iBUYPOWER Masters FML 2026, junior said promising AWPers in NA are stuck without strong IGL systems around them.

Voca had attended few LAN events this season while chasing VRS points, including results taken from South American competition, and junior called the team's upcoming trips to Sweden and Argentina important to its long-shot Major hopes. He pointed to Shakezullah's role in developing his own game and JT's influence on rival AWPer oSee as examples of what strong IGL support can do, adding that he and oSee have been each other's benchmark for seven years and that he hopes oSee finds a team soon. Voca would go on to fall 0-2 to M80 in a group-stage do-or-die match, results that fit into the wider picture the group-stage matchups across CS2's current tournament calendar have been drawing.

The interview, published September 26, 2026, was edited for length and clarity. Junior's comments tie his own path as one of NA's rare homegrown AWP stars to a broader question hanging over the region, one that will keep surfacing as long as the sport's biggest stages, recently topped by Team Spirit's Esports World Cup win, keep exposing the gap between systems.
