A sequel to Alan Wake will be unveiled at the Spike TV Video Game Awards on December 10th.

The news was first picked up on the company's official website, with Microsoft's Major Nelson revealing the title was to be digital only in a later Tweet, stating: "We can confirm that this new "Alan Wake" game will be a fully standalone experience and released on Xbox Live."

The original Alan Wake's narrative was built to mirror the episodic structure of TV shows. While the confirmation is of one Alan Wake title (singular), there's potential here for the return of the horror series to split its story and adopt an episodic release model.

Update: The title is believed to be the rumoured XBLA spin-off that was rumoured earlier this year, rather than a direct sequel to the first game - this leaked screenshot, reportedly snapped from the game's title screen, collaborates the "Night Springs" subtitle that had been flagged previously for the XBLA off-shoot. The news headline has been altered accordingly to reflect this new information.
