Need for Speed: Shift developer Slighty Mad Studios has announced a new racing project, entitled C.A.R.S.
The acronym equates to Community Assisted Racing Simulation - a title that serves the project well, for while the full game won't be released until late next year, the studio is opening its development doors to fan participation and feedback.
C.A.R.S will be developed using another handy acronym:the WMD Portal. The World of Mass Development Portal, to give it its full name, is an online platform that lets fans discuss, submit ideas, play builds, offer feedback and help fund the project alongside the development studio.
Registration to its forum is open now, and fans can sign up to join the C.A.R.S team on November 11.
Interestingly, the studio has stated that all those who worked on the game will earn a share of the revenues earned. Places will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with additional placements opening up during the development cycle - but the studio state "Founder Team Members" will get exclusive benefits.
Joining fans - and more importantly, the development team - on creating the game is Ben Collins, the man who was known as "Stig" for seven years on BBC's Top Gear program, who'll be adding his racing knowledge to the title.
"Computer games and simulations have become integral to success on the race track and I will be applying all my racing knowledge to provide handling input and advice to the builds on a regular basis," explains Collins. "I'm also looking forward to meeting some of the project's contributors at the trackday events and working with SMS's team of experts, whose passion and pedigree will be key to the development of this incredibly exciting new model."
The game will be free to play on release, with a view of a future release on consoles. You can get more info about WMD through the official site and follow the studio's work on Twitter @WMDCars. The first screens from the title can be seen below.
