Konami have announced that actor Kiefer Sutherland will be lending his voice and facial animations to the character of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The news was revealed as part of the company's pre-E3 conference, a pre-recorded video running through their upcoming show titles.

Hideo Kojima stated that Sutherland "was the perfect fit in terms of age and performance".

"It's an honor to be able to play this character," explained the 24 actor. "This character has an unbelievable legacy, and there's a real personal quality to the character that I've connected to.

"I'm not a gamer," he continued. "But even I was aware of this game. I was keenly aware of the legacy, the unbelievable success of these games."

Original Snake voice actor, who's played the role since PSOne's Metal Gear Solid, was quick to take to Twitter at the news.

"Ah well, can't fault @RealKiefer. Great actor, good man. The game will probably still be excellent. Like New Coke!"
