Internet news-hounds have picked up the scent of not one, but two new WipEout that are potentially in development at Sony, one named WipEout Trinity, the other WipEout 2048.

Researchers point to a job listing on Sony's site last year with Studio Liverpool (creator of the franchise that stretches back all the way to the launch of the PSOne) recruiting for a lead designer to work on "future iterations"" of the WipEout brand.

According to reports, Sony has registered both WipEout Trinity and WipEout 2048 as domain names, the former last year, the latter in the last month. We know that at least one title in the series has been earmarked for a NGP release.

The question not only is does that mean the other is set for a PS3 release, but the meaning behind the names. Sony has done a good job so far of re-packaging classic trilogies onto the PS3 with an added HD makeover.

Trinity could allude to the three PSOne titles, with all tracks, ships and music merged together and given a hd lick of paint. It's happened already back in the PSOne days, with the hard-to-find WipEout 3: Special Edition that lifted tracks from its predecessors.

As for 2048 - the number is important , given the second title in the series carried the 2097 subtitle, a nod to the year in which the anti-grav racing game was set. Could we be looking at retro-styled creations from Feisar, Qirex, and the other WipEout racing teams?

Expect something to be revealed come E3.
