The latest monthly report from the NPD Group paints a pretty healthy picture of the American video game market as total sales grew 26% year-on-year in August. The best-selling title was unsurprisingly Madden NFL 19, which enjoyed the strong launch in the franchise since Madden NFL 13. Behind Madden was Monster Hunter: World boosted by the launch of the PC version. One thing of particular interest is that sales of Rainbow Six: Siege climbed massively on the back of a free weekend and the Six Majors in Paris to score a place on the podium. Not too shabby. GTAV continues to sell massive amounts and it is currently the fifth best-selling game year-to-date in America, five years after its original launch. Another interesting tidbit was that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 managed to rank at number 8, a result of the game being given backwards compatibility on Xbox One on August 28.
On the hardware side of things it was peachy too with a 28% increase year-on-year, with PS4, Xbox One, Switch all registering growth. The Switch was the best selling console for the month, whiel PS4 remains the best-selling platforms both in terms of units and dollars for 2018. A major part of the increased hardware spending is due to NES Mini and SNES Mini.
