Square Enix is branching out with plans to built a new studio in Canada, joining current occupant Eidos Montreal in reaping in the benefits from the country's tax incentives, which has seen THQ set up shop there recently.

Industry site Gamesindustry.biz reports that three areas are currently being looked at for the location: Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto, with the studio to open sometime in 2012.

Rather interestingly Eidos Montreal director Stéphane D'Astou, who is in charge with deciding the location, stated to a Canadian newspaper that the reason for its creation was due to the new generation of consoles being developed.

"The new consoles from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will require more attention and more staff," he said. "We want to prepare ourselves."

While companies are always working on future technology, this news makes those future plans more concrete. We'd heard that Microsoft were seeking staff to work on a successor to Xbox 360, which is already half a decade old, and there's rumours that Nintendo could reveal a Wii 2 come E3 or later this year.

The new studio will be sitting cosy next to Eidos Montreal and its title Deus Ex.
