David Brevik who previously has worked in Blizzard North and in Gazillion Entertainment is a veteran who is returning to his roots after being in charge of some major products at big studios. This year he aims to release his new solo developed game It Lurks Below on Steam. That's right after having worked with rather large teams for most of his career Brevik is now a one-man development team. This also means you shouldn't expect this to be a sprawling game along the lines of Diablo, Hellgate: London or Marvel Heroes, but something smaller in scale and more focused. The game has been in development for about a year now.
It Lurks Below features dungeon crawl-like mechanics as in Diablo and Marvel Heroes, but it also has a style of sandbox games that lets players dig and construct, much like in Terraria and Minecraft. It Lurks Below is an action-RPG with the sort of mechanics you'd expect and lots of loot. "I wanted to make an RPG, with classes and leveling up, random items, where you get more and more powerful as you go down into the core of the world and fight baddies," Brevik told Polygon.
It Lurks Below will be a roguelike game, meaning that there will be "procedurally generated levels populated with randomized monsters". The players uses wands - which are basically guns - in combat, but there will also be tools like a pickaxe. Of course, the pickaxe is also used for hacking your way through the environments. Weapons and enemies will have their own stats and "elemental attributes". Brevik is open about the fact that in this aspect of the game he is inspired by the Diablo series. There will be a more casual and less challenging creative mode, normal and finally hardcore mode, which features permadeath.
This upcoming weekend there is a closed beta test for the game, but it is limited to only 200 people. Brevik wants to stream his game on Twitch on Saturday, 3rd of February at 06:00 CET.
Brevik also aims to make updates and add content after the game's release. He wants to make sure the game is "the best it can be", so he wants to listen what the gaming community has to say about his game.
What do you think of the concept for It Lurks Below? Let us know in the comments.
