According to a report in The Guardian, Russian MPs have called for action to be taken against EA's FIFA 17. Why? Because they say the game contains gay propaganda.
The call to action was revealed in a letter published in Russian newspaper Izvestia. In the article communist MP Valery Rashkin suggests that EA should "introduce changes to the programming code or the age classification of this information product, and if it refuses, adopt corresponding restrictive measures."
Meanwhile MP and former Olympic figure skater Irina Rodnina told Izvestia that it was important that authorities verified "the possibility of distributing this game on the territory of the Russian Federation... Every state has its internal laws and order; they need to be obeyed."
The anger comes after the game featured a LGBT support campaign in the UK, #RainbowLaces, an initiative that offers players a free rainbow kit. The inclusive campaign carries the tagline: "Make Sport Everyone's Game."
EA has yet to comment on the matter, but it's highly unlikely that they will give in to these demands. Some of their other games, such as Dragon Age: Inquisition, contain openly transgender characters and the option to have same sex relationships. The Premier League themselves also supported the #RainbowLace campaign and funded a large advertising campaign.
This news follows similarly disturbing reports that players have been quitting the game in response to the inclusive approach taken by EA Sports in its flagship series.
