Last year's surprise hit game Rocket League might have PlayStation Plus to thank for its success, but offering up the game free on Sony's service was not an easy decision.

In a Youtube documentary by Noclip a number of the Psyonix staff talk about their difficulties up until launch, and the developer was apparently out of money when it was time to promote the game.

Vice president of Psyonix, Jeremy Dunham, says:

"We didn't have any money to spend. Our budget for marketing and PR was practically nothing. Our big challenge was how we get it out to other people."

He then goes on to say that they were on the fence about it right up until the announcement:

"It was a difficult decision. This was not something that we absolutely, 100 percent wanted to do. It took a lot of discussion."

As we all know, it worked out just fine for Rocket League. It has sold 8 million copies, and has been played by 22 million people, and since launch it has earned Psyonix $110 million (USD) as well as a great reputation.
