The new Friendly update for Minecraft brings with it cross-platform play between iOS, Android and Windows 10.

The update adds Minecraft Realms to these platforms. Realms allows you to play with anyone on any platform. This includes dedicated servers hosted by Microsoft that allow you and your friends to drop in and out of the game as you like.

This update also bring in the Oculus compatibility, meaning VR players can also enjoy the game with anyone one else.

Other features included in the Friendly update include texture packs and add-ons being introduced to the Pocket Edition. This means players can change AI and appearances of characters to create stories in their own realms.

The update was demoed during Microsoft's E3 presser, where versions of the game on different platforms interacted with each other in-game (including one person playing on an iPad).

Former id Software and Doom designer John Carmack even came on stage and joined in while wearing a Gear VR headset.

The update is available now and they are hoping to bring all of the new cross platform functionality to consoles next year. More information and updates to be announced at Minecon in September.
