"If you love something, you set it free": the headline for a new blog post from Epic, in which the studio has announced its giving away its Unreal Engine 4 to developers.

And it's the full version of the tech. "It scales from indie projects to high-end blockbusters," explains Tim Sweeny in the post. "It supports all the major platforms; and it includes 100% of the C++ source code."

The only concession is a royalty percentage if certain milestones are reached: a 5% cut of gross revenue "after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter".

The decision came from the huge influx of indie developers who subscribed last year to gain access to the tech.

"We have seen no time of greater opportunity for developers than today. Whatever your development aspirations," Sweeny concludes. "Epic stands with you, both as a technology provider, and as a fellow game developer counting on UE4 to power our own games."
