Videogame entertainment topped music and film in both retail and digital sales last year, a new report by the Entertainment Retailers Association states.
As reported by Gamesindustry International, games took in £1,926 million - 40.2% of the entertainment market - in 2011. Video took £1,802 million (37.6%), and music £1,066 million (22.2%).
Digital game sales accounted for £504 million (compared to £333 million for music and only £97 million for video).
Kim Bayley, Director General of ERA, said of the announcement, "This is a dramatic time for the entertainment market. It is an historic development for the games sector to have overtaken video last year. Video has long been the biggest entertainment sector. Sales so far this year, however, suggest video is not going down without a fight."
