Obviously Crazy Taxi's mobile port did wonders, as Sega's announced that a brand new game in the series is being made exclusively for iOS and Android, and its creator Kenji Kanno, is behind the driving wheel.

He's working with Sega mobile developer Hardlight Studios (Sonic Jump, Sonic Dash) on Crazy Taxi: City Rush, a title that's supposed to "capture the spirit" of the series.

The few specifics that have been given suggest a different take on the racer. The original had you picking up passengers and driving wildly for more tips across two huge cities. The press release announcing the news states that there's "a wide variety of adrenaline-fueled missions, wild challenges - and unique areas to unlock, explore, and master as you progress through the campaign.

Customize your cab to increase its power and visual appeal with a wide variety of over-the-top upgrades. Take your friends for a ride and blaze a trail through the city, sidewalks, and alleyways for special rewards."

That the game's free to download (its soft-launched in some territories now, with a roll out of others coming later in the year) might have the alarm bells ringing at potential micro-transactions being folded into the experience; we'll have to see when we get our hands on the game. It'll be available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android devices.

"I'm very excited to finally be able to share with you the first news of Crazy Taxi: City Rush," said Executive Producer and creator of the arcade original, Kenji Kanno. "We are delivering a truly fun game that captures everything our fans love about the original and infusing it with several new features to create an even more fantastic and memorable experience."

Off the back of this is the news that the original title is now available for free for a limited time on iOS and Android. If you were a fan of the original arcade and Dreamcast versions, take it from us - we've been playing it repeatedly since it first launched, and its a great version. Controls work brilliantly, and equally as important: the original Bad Religion and Offspring tracks are included as well. Get downloading!
