Ever since Fallout 76 launched there have been a number of complaints leveled against it, with one of the biggest being the lack of NPCs in the world. At E3 this year Bethesda revealed this would change with the upcoming Wastelanders update, but it seems hackers have already found a way to shoehorn them in.
When emailing Kotaku, Reddit user TheGeminaii (part of the Dupers R Us group) shared a video showing how they've added NPCs into the game, and they say "their functionality is actually incredibly high".
"They will wander around your camp while idle, and in combat they will relentlessly chase their opponent, taking cover and retreating when necessary," the email adds.
These NPCs have also acted as companions, protecting the player, but there are some limitations, as they spawn without clothes, and some don't even have weapons. Even when they do fire, the sounds can be replaced by the sound of a turret, and they can't leave your camp unless hunting an enemy.
That said, TheGeminaii is still working on improving the NPCs, but who knows whether Bethesda will clamp down on this, since they're bringing their own official NPCs into the game via The Wastelanders, coming next year.
When we talked with Bethesda at E3 they told us that NPCs were the "number one most-requested feature" in the game, and indeed there was a very positive response when it was revealed at the show.
Can NPCs dramatically improve Fallout 76?
