Gearbox has been showing off plenty of Borderlands 3 since revealing it for the first time earlier this year, including the world of Promethea, and now we have an insight into the character of Zane, who even gets his very own trailer all to himself.
He's described as "a semi-retired corporate hitman with decades of espionage under his belt and plenty of gadgets up his sleeve", and we get more details on the character via Borderlands 3's site.
"Take advantage of Zane's unique ability to equip two Action Skills to help decimate your enemies," said game designer Grant Kao. "With the passive tree Doubled Agent, Zane players gain large bonuses such as Synchronicity's increase to gun damage when both Action Skills are active. And don't fear: just because you can't manually throw a grenade doesn't mean you can't use a grenade! Grab Fractal Frags or Duct Tape Mod and your Action Skills and gun fire will litter the area with explosions!"
The Doubled Agent skill tree is all about making use of your Digi-Clone, which you can see in the trailer, and here you can find bonuses that reward Zane for having two Action Skills active at the same time. Examples of the skills include Quick Breather, letting Zane immediately start a shield recharge when he swaps with his Digi-Clone, as well as Double Barrel, increasing DPS by giving the Digi-Clone a copy of your current weapon.
Then we have the Hitman skill tree, granting bonuses for killing enemies, as well as those killed by your hovering SNTNL drone. Kill Skills are included here, activated every time you kill an enemy and granting effects like faster firing rate or the chance to shoot extra projectiles, but there are also other skills like Salvation, giving your damage some life steal after you kill, and Death Follows Close, which improves effectiveness and duration of Kill Skills.
The Under Cover skill tree, however, comes with a Barrier Action Skill to deploy a shield blocking enemy fire, also granting extra damage when you shoot through it. This can be improved by increasing maximum shield capacity and decreasing recharge rate, as well as skills like Confident Competence - buffing Zane's damage and accuracy when shields are active - and Calm, Cool, Collected, which rewards Zane for using cryo weapons by regenerated shields, health, or Action Skills in that order.
Zane - in the operative class - definitely has a lot up his sleeve, and joins the roster of Amara in the siren class, FL4K in the Beastmaster class, and Moze in the gunner class. We actually got the chance to play as Moze at E3 this year, and if you're interested in seeing how much carnage she can cause, check out the gameplay below as well, which shows another avenue to go down if Zane's skills aren't sounding like your cup of tea.
Will Zane be your choice though?
