Worlds Adrift is an MMO with a twist, and when we spoke to Bossa Studios' co-founder Henrique Olifiers at Gamelab in Barcelona, he explained to us precisely how the game sets itself apart from others in the genre, which all has to do with creation.
"We live in the makers' generation today, people make videos on YouTube, they post articles [...] and so on," he explained. "We are not happy anymore just to play and consume, we want to be part of the journey, even if I just watch a video I want to criticise it, hoping that the writer will read and then the next one he changes; that's making something, right?"
"And this realisation brought us to the moment where we created the first game that is made by the players before it launched, and Worlds Adrift is that: the first MMO that was made by the players. Every island in the sky of Worlds Adrift, the places you visit - every single one was made by one of the players."
It turns out it's not only islands that can be edited, but also ships, as Olifiers explains, meaning that you can craft a ship and change the way it behaves. "Everything in Worlds Adrift was made for you to be able to change and do in your own way, because it's the first sandbox MMO in that there is no fixed rules or no fixed objectives," he continued. "You as a player figure out what you're gonna do."
The game is currently out in early access for you to try right now, but do you like the whole design philosophy around it?
