We sat down with Sofia Boutella ahead of Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver
The star of Zack Snyder's epic sci-fi franchise spoke about her career and inspirations for Kora.
Just ahead of the film's premiere last Friday, we got a chance to sit down with Rebel Moon star and action icon Sofia Boutella to discuss the second part of Zack Snyder's epic franchise and her career as part of a roundtable. Find our questions and answers below:
Q: A lot of us were introduced to you in the film space through Kingsman Secret Service. Before that, obviously, you've been dancing, especially for Madonna. And now you're in the central leading role for a big sci fi franchise. I was wondering if you'd like to share any thoughts on how your career has progressed and what's your thoughts about maybe even what's next and how you feel to be in this position right now?
A: "I love it. That's why I started doing theatre when I was 17. Actually 16 When I booked this movie in France called Dance Challenge. And I quickly understood that, oh, I always dance from a place from a narrative place, as opposed to a dance step driven place. And I thought I really loved it. And so I kept taking classes and in theatre, but I really wanted to dance. So I put theatre aside. And then I sort of juggled with it for a while. And then when I stopped dancing, I really committed since starting with Kingsman to acting, which was about 10 years ago. So I think that was 10 years ago, you probably know more than me."
Q: I think it is 10 years this year.
A: "I feel truly grateful. I feel I don't take the journey for granted, it was not necessarily easy. It's a complicated route that I took, I sort of did things out of order. It's another career basically, that takes a lot of work and a lot of time and effort. So I feel extremely grateful that I have all these opportunities and and that I have even had this opportunity."
Q: I recall you saying in a previous interview that you put a lot of yourself into Kora, your character, that there's a lot you can relate to. I was wondering if you took any other inspirations for Kora when conjuring the image of her?
A: "Yeah, no, I didn't for this piece sometimes I do for the project. But with this one, I mean, Zack [Snyder] created such an original piece with places names of people stories are quite like just quite intense, and storylines are quite unusual. And what we find out about what about Kora's past in part two was quite difficult for me to wrap my head around I couldn't look at any external piece for me to get inspiration from and for me being centred and just trusting just the work and finding the character within the line that I was helped most. Reading the script and talking and spending time talking with Zach about it. I think for me, it was far more interesting. And sometimes it's that we don't have the luxury of time. Sometimes you need to go and find new inspiration somewhere else. But with that amount of time that we had I think I was like just be centred, just be focused, it will come to you as long as you keep going back to the script, doing more work and you're spending time with the character."
